Hatch and Bailey traces its roots back to 1850 when Davis Hatch & Son founded the lumber business in Norwalk. Owned in the 1860s by Burr Knapp, the company was sold in 1872when The Hatch and Bailey Lumberyard and Steam Planing Mill first opened its doors in South Norwalk.
Incorporated 27 years later by Stephen Hatch and James, Walter and Caroline Bailey, the company received its present-day name: The Hatch and Bailey Company, Inc. Still located at 19 Marshall Street, in South Norwalk, the renamed company sold lumber, sash, blinds and building materials. In 1939 Hatch and Bailey set up a Stamford office, officially opening a second location there the next year.
In 1987 Hatch and Bailey moved its Norwalk operation to 1 Meadow Street Extension, offering a larger site and allowing the company to acquire a nearby block manufacturing company to better serve Fairfield County’s expanding needs.
Through the years Hatch and Bailey
